HLTAID013 – Provide First Aid in Remote or Isolated Site
Course Overview
This nationally recognised course provides instruction and practical training in line with legal, workplace and community considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
It equips participants with the skills and knowledge to recognise emergencies and provide immediate and effective first aid treatment to a person suffering sudden illness or injury, particularly in remote or isolated environments where access to emergency services may be delayed.
What You Will Learn
The course covers:
Assessing casualties and ensuring safety
Accessing and communicating with emergency services
Providing CPR and using an AED
Administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis
Administering asthma medication
Assisting a choking casualty
Immobilisation techniques for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
Managing casualties with bleeding and shock
Basic anatomy, physiology, and differences in adult, child and infant CPR
The Chain of Survival and importance of timely intervention
Incident reporting (written and verbal)
Reviewing and debriefing incidents to improve response times and skills
Recognising psychological impacts and accessing support
Remote/isolated site considerations including:
Planning and preparing for remote trips
Conducting triage
Coordinating evacuation
Completing equipment checklists
Units Delivered
On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for:
HLTAID013 – Provide First Aid in remote or isolated site
HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support (BELS)
HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Course Delivery Options
Online + Face-to-Face Assessment
Pre-course online study
Minimum 7 hours face-to-face practical assessment
Recommended for learners comfortable with computers/online training
Face-to-Face Only
16 hours (2 days) in-class delivery
Ideal for learners who prefer practical, kinaesthetic learning or have difficulty completing online study
Both options include theory and practical assessments with scenario-based activities.
Entry Requirements
Physical capacity to perform practical demonstrations (e.g. 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor, rescue breathing on manikins)
Online study option requires access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet
Assessment Activities
Practical scenarios and performance tasks include:
Adult CPR with AED use + recovery position
Infant CPR
First Aid incident report form completion
Anaphylaxis and asthma response
Choking management
Wound care for bleeding and shock
Nosebleed management
Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
Envenomation (snake/spider bite)
Hyperthermia management
Remote site scenario: trip planning, triage, evacuation coordination, equipment checklist
Written theory assessment: multiple choice + short answers.
