HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
This nationally recognised course is designed for educators and support staff who are required to respond to first aid emergencies in childcare, school, and early childhood environments. Training is aligned with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, national peak clinical bodies, and workplace/legal requirements.
What You Will Learn
Identifying illness or injury and accessing emergency services
Providing safe and effective first aid treatment using action plans, equipment, and resources
CPR and defibrillation for adults, children, and infants
Managing anaphylaxis (use of autoinjector) and asthma emergencies
Immobilisation for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains
Controlling bleeding, shock, and other common childhood emergencies
Recognising psychological impacts and supporting children in distress
Communicating incident details to parents, caregivers, and emergency services
Completing incident reports and participating in debriefing for continuous improvement
Units Delivered
On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment in:
HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support (BELS)
HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
Course Delivery Options
Online + Face-to-Face Assessment
Pre-course online study plus at least 6 hours in-class practical assessment.
Best suited for learners confident with computers and online study.Face-to-Face
At least 12 hours (2 days) of in-person training and assessment.
Recommended for learners who prefer a practical, hands-on environment or have limited computer access.
Entry Requirements
Physical capacity to perform practical tasks such as 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.
For online study: access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet connection.
Assessment
Practical Tasks & Scenarios:
CPR on adult, child, and infant (including AED and recovery position)
Managing asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, bleeding, fractures, sprains, strains, envenomation, and other emergencies
Completing first aid incident reports
Written Assessment: Multiple-choice questions (verbal options available for accessibility).
Certificate Renewal
Industry recommendation: every 3 years (with CPR updated annually).
