Warden, Chief Warden & Extinguisher Use Course

Overview

This course is commonly referred to as the Warden, Chief Warden and Extinguisher Use Course. It equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to:

  • Lead, command, control and coordinate facility emergency response procedures.

  • Make decisions about occupant safety during an emergency.

  • Liaise with emergency services as the primary contact during incidents.

  • Confine small emergencies in a facility using initial response equipment.

The course is aligned with Australian Standards 3745 (Planning for emergencies in facilities) and 4083 (Health care facilities). It applies to employees across all industries who may be members of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) in roles such as Chief Warden, Deputy Chief Warden, Communications Officer, or Wardens.

What You Will Learn

Participants will gain practical skills to:

  • Undertake pre-emergency planning and contribute to facility emergency plans.

  • Command, control and coordinate ECO response during incidents.

  • Safely confine small emergencies such as:

    • Fires controllable with extinguishers.

    • Chemical spills managed with PPE and spill kits.

    • Minor vehicle accidents without significant injury or damage.

  • Operate communication systems and give clear directions to occupants.

  • Assist people who may require support during evacuations.

  • Brief and liaise with emergency services.

  • Apply WHS/OHS practices, risk management, and post-emergency procedures.

Units Delivered

On successful completion, participants will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for:

  • PUAFER005 – Operate as part of an emergency control organisation

  • PUAFER006 – Lead an emergency control organisation

  • PUAFER008 – Confine small emergencies in a facility

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered at your workplace or at a training facility organised by the provider.

Delivery Options:

  • Online with face-to-face assessment – Pre-course online learning + 2 hours face-to-face assessment.

  • Face-to-face training – 7 hours contact time, including theory, practical activities and assessment. Recommended for participants who prefer hands-on learning or may have limited computer skills.

Entry Requirements

Participants must be able to:

  • Complete practical demonstrations, including using fire equipment and communication systems.

  • Wear ECO identification (vests, helmets, armbands, etc.).

  • Access a device with internet and video capability for online study (if applicable).

Assessment

Assessment includes:

  • Performance tasks – operating as part of an ECO, leading during emergencies, managing a small fire or chemical spill.

  • Documentation – completing incident reports, emergency logs, evacuation records.

  • Theory – written multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

Certification & Renewal

  • Upon successful completion, a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued by Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.

  • Units do not have mandatory expiry, however refresher training is recommended every 1–2 years to maintain competency and confidence.
